Monsummano Hill rises on the northern slopes of Montalbano, where the Nievole stream flows into the plain. This itinerary is ideal for those seeking a pleasant walk in nature, as well as for those interested in exploring the geological and natural features of the area.

Itinerary

he hike begins on Via Maneto, near the town hall, following CAI Trail 832. The path ascends through a residential area and then becomes a dirt trail, winding through woods and olive groves. Continuing uphill along CAI 832, you reach Monsummano Alto, where you’ll find the remains of the castle walls, the archway of Porta del Pidocchio (also known as Porta del Mercato), the pentagonal tower, and the gate of Nostra Domina. From here, there’s a wide panoramic view over the plain, the Montalbano ridge, and the village of Montevettolini.

Passing Podere alla Vergine, the trail begins to descend until it intersects with Trail 830, coming from Grotta Giusti. Along the way, you’ll spot the entrance to the Cava Rossa, and shortly after, the Cava Grigia, now used as a climbing wall. Continuing on, you’ll see the imposing terraced face of the Cava Grande. A left turn onto Via Perincolle leads you back down to Monsummano, completing the loop.
