Set in early 1960s Baltimore, during a time of tension between conservatives and progressives fighting for racial integration, this musical brings dance and music to the forefront, capturing a spirit of rebellion and a desire to express the core values of democracy.
The story follows Tracy Turnblad, a cheerful and talented young dancer with a big dream: to become part of the Corny Collins Show, the most popular TV program among Baltimore’s youth.
When one of the dancers leaves the show, the producers begin searching for a fresh new face. Despite several obstacles, Tracy makes it onto the show, finds true love, and fights for the integration of her friends, who have been forced to dance in a segregated part of the program.
