The Pescia River is the soul of the town that shares its name: it originates in the mountains above Vellano and flows into the Padule di Fucecchio. The name comes from the Lombard word “pehhia”, meaning river, and only later came to refer to the town itself. Since the Middle Ages, the river has divided the settlement into two areas, connected by four historic bridges. This cycling route starts in the town and follows the river to the Padule.
Itinerary
The route begins at the Passerella Sforzini, passing under the Ponte Europa and Ponte del Marchi. Continuing along the riverbank, to the right you can admire the hill of Montecarlo, and to the left the hills dotted with villages like Uzzano, La Costa, Buggiano, Colle, Cozzile, Stignano, Massa, and Montecatini Alto. In the west, Monsummano Alto is clearly visible, and below on the right lies Montevettolini. The plain below hosts the towns of Montecatini Terme and Monsummano Terme. Ahead, the valley opens up, giving way to the vast expanse of the Padule di Fucecchio.
As you continue, you pass through the village of Ponte Buggianese, and soon you’ll see the Grande Lago, a vast poplar grove, and the Monaca–Righetti Nature Reserve, home to many bird species. To return to Pescia, follow the same route back.
