The history of the thermal town of Montecatini begins in the 15th century with Ugolino Simoni Caccini, “father of the waters”, who was the first person to theorise hydrotherapy as a medical cure. Ugolino spoke of a bath protected by a small roof: he was referring to the Tettuccio Spa<\/strong>, the “new bath” founded in 1370.\u00a0This is a symbol of the town: it stands on the Via Verdi, the avenue of the thermal baths, and in its monumental complex, it holds works of many great artists, such as Galileo Chini, Sirio Tofanari, Ezio Giovannozzi, Basilio Cascella, to name but a few.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The luxurious building of the Terme Regina<\/strong>, built at the beginning of the 20th century, still amazes visitors, even to this day, as they pass into the entrance with its ‘Heron and Frog Fountain’, by Raffaele Romanelli.\u00a0Near the buildings of the Town Hall, the Excelsior\u00a0cinema and the Tamerici Pavilion lies the Excelsior Spa<\/strong> which offers avantgarde treatments which mix together the beneficial aspects of the waters and of the mud baths with relaxation techniques for the body and mind, as well as personalized, aesthetic\u00a0treatments.

The Giusti Grotto<\/strong> takes its name from the thousand-year old grotto into which flow extraordinary waters; it is a thermal resort and a wellbeing centre, surrounded by a 45 hectare park, in an natural atmosphere of incomparable beauty.
\nThe actual grotto is a marvel of nature in its own right: adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, it is divided into three areas\u00a0– Paradise, Purgatory and Hell<\/strong> – with temperatures ranging from 28\u00b0 to 34\u00b0C, while the area called Limbo is a crystalline mirror of water, constantly at 36\u00b0C all the year round. The spring’s waters also flow into the two swimming pools with hydromassage.<\/p>\n

Apart from thermal treatment, the centre also offers aesthetic treatments and therapies aimed at recovering a good physical and mental balance.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Giuseppe Verdi described it as the eighth “Wonder of the World”: the Giusti Grotto, still today, enchants the guests of the same named thermal resort and wellbeing centre who go there in search of relaxation, care and rest.
\nDiscovered by chance in 1849, when some labourers of the Giusti family, working in a lime quarry, digging into the rock, first came across the cavity and then the little lake; the grotto\u00a0immediately became a popular place for those loving to take ‘steam baths’.
\nThe Stabilimento Regio was constructed on the site and, in 1880, the Hotel Reale was built, where famous historical celebrities, such as Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Prince of Naples and Giuseppe Verdi often came to stay.Over the years, the grotto has been considerably modified so that – without having spoiled its original natural\u00a0beauty – its internal route has been rendered safer and easier to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>
