The loop itinerary around the marshland intertwines the<strong> history of World War II <\/strong>with the observation of the natural environment, which is home to a rich variety of bird species and other animals adapted to wetland habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Itinera<\/strong>ry<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep the memory of the massacre alive, the route leads to shrines and monuments commemorating the victims of this tragic event. The starting point is near the <em>Dogana del Capannone<\/em>, next to the shrine dedicated to Pellegrino and Rocco Cardelli. Along the bike tour, you\u2019ll encounter several structures that reflect centuries of human intervention in shaping and modifying the marsh. The Medici and Lorraine dynasties played a major role in the management and reclamation of vast areas in Tuscany, leaving behind works still in use today, such as drainage canals, the port system, and the Medici bridge of Cappiano. Continuing onward, you\u2019ll reach the monument dedicated to the Martyrs of the Marsh, created by sculptor Gino Terreni.
