It was renamed the “Swiss Pesciatina” by Geneva-born historian Sismondi, as its lush and varied landscape reminded him of his homeland. Here lie the dieci castella (ten castles), ancient fortified villages built in local pietra serena stone, protected by walls and watchtowers. San Quirico, one of these ten villages, is located on the eastern slope of Monte Battifolle and offers breathtaking views over the entire valley. It is also home to a magnificent Romanesque church dedicated to Saints Quirico and Giuditta, known for its two fine baptismal fonts.

Itinerary

The loop trail starting in San Quirico is short, suitable for all, and offers a refreshing immersion in the woods of the Valdinievole. Leaving the village — the highest point in the Valleriana — you follow the CAI Trail 250 uphill to the small rural church of Madonna del Tamburino, where there is a water source for a pleasant break. Continuing along the trail, you begin to descend along the ridge. After a short distance, turning left, you rejoin CAI Trail 250, which leads you back to the village. Before leaving San Quirico, it’s worth wandering through its narrow lanes that climb toward the upper part of the village, ending in a beautiful square, and visiting the Museum of Rural Life (Museo della Civiltà Contadina), located within the Il Frantoio agritourism complex.

Nearby

San Quirico Church of Madonna del Soccorso

Pescia Cathedral, Civic Museums, Paper Museum, Pinocchio Park, Historic Garden of Villa Garzoni, Butterfly House

Distance

4,85 km

Elevation Gain

320 m

Difficulty

Low

San Quirico, one of the ten Castella of the Valleriana, not only offers a splendid view over the entire valley but also houses the magnificent Romanesque church dedicated to Saints Quirico and Giuditta.
